Attractions : Mission Santa Ines -- This Mission was the one of 21 missions built in California from 1769 to 1836 by Spanish Franciscan priests. Santa Ynez valley : L ocated in northern Santa Barbara County, the Santa Ynez Valley is just 35 miles from the beaches of Santa Barbara, 125 miles up the coast from Los Angeles and 300 miles south of San Francisco. Golf Courses : Alisal River Course is just south of Mission Drive on Alisal Road, the spectacular River Course is situated on the banks of the Santa Ynez River against a backdrop of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Four lakes grace the championship course, part of the famous 10,000 -acre Alisal Ranch resort. Sycamores, elderberry trees and oaks punctuate the setting. Par is 72 on each of four sets of tees designed to challenge golfers of any skill level; the championship course is 6,830 yards. ShoppingDescended from a long line of grape growers, the Lucas brothers came to Santa Barbara County and planted their first vineyard in the Santa Maria valley in 1970. Building a reputation as a grower of the finest quality wine grapes, Louis Lucas has provided his grapes to many of California's finest wineries. In 1996, Judge Royce Lewellen joined forces to form Lucas & Lewellen vineyards, a venture that continues to acquire premium vineyards and grow and sell grapes of the highest quality.
Wineries : The region is known especially for its outstanding chardonnay, pinot noir and syrah, but also produces superior riesling, sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon, viognier and many other varietals in more than 70 vineyards. The majority are small operations run by individuals or families.
